In November 2016 I spoke at an Internet of Things / Smart Cities conference in Chicago. This was before I went on stage with 8 other women who came to speak with me on a panel. It should be noted there were zero other women scheduled for this conference before I pushed the subject and let the conference hosts know it was pretty shocking that it was 2016 and this massive conference, over 5 days, in Chicago McCormick Conference Center was remiss in finding any women to speak.
They agreed and quickly added a "Women's Track" to the agenda and added us at the last minute. After we spoke on many topics over a few different panels, men would come up to us to ask for pictures because they said no one would believe them there were women speakers at this event, some of them said they wanted the pictures to show their daughters it is possible to be a woman in technology.
