We did a field trip up from Oakland to Sacramento to check out the HackerLab there in Downtown Sac. The goal was to use the conceptual drawings kids made during our Resilient Oakland workshops where they illustrated functionality of an App that monitored a series of spaces, people, and pets for safety alerts, notifications, and way finder capabilities to reunite family members and pets in the case of an accident or emergency.

We got to see how the lab is laid out, try 3D printers, laser cutters, how to set up Arduino breadboards, do a little open source programming, set up perimeter monitors, alerts, and light strobes to symbolically represent alarms to be triggered if someone crossed over a safety boundary.

W had an amazing day learning how to connect and build elements of a safe park/family/pets app the kids designed during Vision Architecture workshops so they could quickly transform their ideas and drawings into working prototypes.

This workshop took place in 2018.
