I did a lot of volunteer work in Oakland trying to learn as much as I possibly could about what environmental hazards exist in the Town and why Public Health agencies are strapped and can't really get a foot hold on addressing these negative health issues.
I came up with a series of illustrations and logos to use when trying to tell the story of what's wrong and potential strategies for gaining some traction toward mitigations.
How is government supposed to keep a LOT of people, who don't check with the government before going about their days and nights, keep people from entering unsafe environments?
Should there be a public platform easily accessible, if you have a smart phone, made available by safety experts? Something like OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) but for the public? It would be fairly straight forward, technically, but politically, it could be impossible.
Maybe the app could point out businesses, homes, and schools around where someone lives and proactively recommend they test their homes, air, and soil for toxins they were aware could be in their environments.
Maybe it could steer you away from houses and apartments that have dangerous materials in them so you don't end up renting or buying a place to live that causes you and your family long-term harm. A lot of landlords and sellers just don't know their units have issues and so don't disclose risks. This app would be a public safety feature to reduce lower life expectancies.
