Traffic was a major topic of concern in Melrose from the day I arrived and it still is today. Neighbors were worried their children, pets, neighbors, and visitors would be hit by cars routinely barreling down Foothill without stopping for lights or any other traffic laws.
We started brainstorming if we could raise money and possibly get various technologies we could install around the neighborhood to monitor and report issues for us to hopefully make us safer and also provide data and proof to Oakland City Police Department and Oakland Dept. Transportation to get them to come in and do something about people breaking safety laws and also put in traffic calming solutions to physically limit the speed any vehicles could reach down this long, straight, main street.
We talked about installing radar detectors hooked up to speed signs.
We looked into license plate readers to see if it was feasible to buy our own and then create a relationship with OPD or ODOT to use that information to pull people over or enforce speed limits.
We talked about putting a speed trap sort of kit together and then getting a rack that could be attached to someone's vehicle so the trap could be moved around the neighborhood.
