The Failure Pattern

I've been consulting with companies in a lot of different industries, using different technologies, and different strategies to achieve their goals. The odd thing is, no matter the industry, technology, or strategies I saw the same pattern occur, over, and over again.

Have you ever seen something like this in your world?

  • People have a lot of great ideas...almost too many...

  • a leaders says he's got the best idea and gathers everyone...

  • he says the idea should be done very quickly...

  • teams get together and head out to hit their launch date...

  • they speed away from each other...

  • the idea gets money...

  • teams stop to work on idea but no one knows what it means...

  • they don't ask because everyone seems to be fine...

  • the leader talks about better use of resources...

  • and how many people are waiting to see his prototypes...

  • teams head back to hit the deadline with something, anything...

  • the launch date is a time bomb...

  • the crash takes everything out of commission...

  • new teams are brought in to find out what happened...

  • a lot of people get fired...

  • two years later a new leader gathers everyone with a big idea...
